Union Home Minister Amit Shah has strongly criticized the 1975 Emergency, labeling it an ‘era of injustice’ fueled by the Congress party’s desire for power. He stated that the current government, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, observes June 25 as ‘Samvidhan Hatya Diwas’ to educate younger generations about this challenging period in Indian democracy. Shah’s statement on X emphasized the immense suffering caused by the Emergency and the importance of remembering how the people can resist dictatorial tendencies. He also pointed out how democratic institutions were undermined during that time, with the press stifled and political opponents imprisoned. The Union Cabinet held a two-minute silence to honor those who endured the Emergency’s hardships, with a resolution passed to mark the 50th anniversary. The resolution described the Emergency as an assault on the Constitution and democratic values, while reaffirming the nation’s commitment to safeguarding these principles.
