In Sahibganj, Jharkhand, a young man’s late-night rendezvous with a married woman, the mother of four children, ended with a hefty penalty. He was caught in a compromising situation with his girlfriend. Villagers intervened, initially restraining them with ropes to prevent escape. The couple faced physical assault, with the boyfriend rendered unconscious. A village panchayat convened and imposed a fine of 300,000 rupees on the man. Fortunately, the police were alerted, and they intervened to release the couple. No formal complaint has been filed at the police station so far. The incident occurred in Basko village under the Boriyo police station area. The woman, approximately 30 years old and belonging to the tribal community, was found with the man late on Monday night.
The man was identified as Umesh Singh, 22, a tempo driver from the nearby village of Vangawa. According to villagers, they were discovered in a compromising position and presented to the village head. They were then tied up for about ten hours. The villagers called a panchayat and swiftly decided on a 3 lakh fine. A video of the incident has gone viral on social media.
The woman’s husband had previously suspected an illicit relationship. Upon receiving information, the police arrived at the scene and freed the couple. SDPO Kishore Tirkey stated that no application has been submitted to the police station by either party. The police are conducting their own investigation.
