AIIMS Bhubaneswar is set to receive the designation of Centre of Excellence (CoE) for Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) management and research. The announcement was made by Union Minister of Tribal Affairs, Shri Jual Oram, during World Sickle Cell Awareness Day celebrations. The minister lauded the institute’s dedication to providing comprehensive care to SCD patients, not only in Odisha but also in neighboring states. The institute currently provides care to over 700 registered SCD patients, with more than 500 in the 0-19 age group. Diagnostic services, treatment, and carrier screening are offered, including for extended family members. Prenatal diagnosis services are also available. The government aims to eradicate Sickle Cell Anaemia by 2047, with nationwide screening efforts underway. The minister participated in a review meeting and scientific session, recognizing the institute’s holistic approach to patient care.
